The teenage Italian shortstop who has been dubbed the top European baseball prospect will play for the Burlington Royals. Tommy Shields, the manager of the Burlington team, said Marten Gasparini, 17, has been targeted for the Appalachian League club all along.
MLB.com lists the 30 top international prospects and Gasparini holds the No. 1 spot on that list among European players. Shields said it's important for Gasparini's professional career to begin with a mostly younger group that's expected to be the core of Burlington's roster.
