WORCESTER — Once the sun went behind the community center of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church, summer's last gasp of heat let go, and the evening quickly pivoted from oppressive to warm and comfortable on the bocce courts across the parking lot.
Bocce seemed custom-made for nights like that. Neither the people nor the bocce balls moved too quickly. Players got a chance to sit down on benches and the end of the playing surface between turns. It was mostly calm as players chatted. Cigar smoke wafted into the air. Italian phrases worked their way into conversations.
