For those who long for doo wop, a genre that once dominated the radio and TV air waves, the sounds of the 50s and 60s will come alive Saturday, Aug. 19 when the “Sounds of Summer Concert Series” unfolds beginning at 6:30 p.m. The grand concert production — a sentimental walk down memory lane — will be staged at the Midland Beach Splaza on Father Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue.
The event will celebrate a Staten Island group, as it is the 65th anniversary of Vito Picone and The Elegants’ hit song “Little Star.” The tune topped the charts back in 1958 and sold more than 2.5 million records worldwide, went gold, and remained on the charts for 19 weeks. In 1994 it was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
