When Darren Andretta was in sixth grade, he wrote a report for his Italian class about Professional Bowlers Association rookie Brad Angelo. Sunday, Andretta, a 27-year-old from Mantagh, New York, defeated fellow Italian Angelo, 48, of Lockport, New York, 228-207, to capture the PBA Bowlers Supply/Storm Open at Colony Park Lanes North.
It was the second regional title of the season, and third overall, for Andretta. Besides picking up a check for $2,500, Andretta is now the leading candidate for the PBA East Region Player of the Year honors. Andretta had to come from behind to beat one of his idols. The 6-foot, 3-inch, 290-pound southpaw trailed by 26 pins after seven frames. But, the match turned dramatically when Angelo, a two-time PBA national champ, failed to convert the 6-7-10 split in the eighth frame.
