Giovanni Meli, "The Poet of Sicily," was an Italian poet and man of letters. He is considered one of the most important dialect poets of eighteenth-century Italy. Emeritus Professor Gaetano Cipolla, president of the cultural organization Arba Sicula, will speak of Giovanni Meli and read some of his poems in Sicilian and in English. It was after reading the famous poem by Giovanni Meli's "Ucchiuzzi niuri" at a recital of dialectal poetry, (a poem that W. Goethe translated into German), that Professor Cipolla understood the importance of one's roots whose call he no longer could ignore. Since then he started to devote his time to the study of Sicilian poetry.
