One of the best, most influential Spaghetti Westerns ever made, with a mellow, haunting score by Ennio Morricone. In Italian with English subtitles. Two showings only. Director Sergio Corbucci’s crowning achievement, Il Grande Silenzio tells the story of a vicious bounty hunter (Loco) and a mute gunslinger (Silence) who lock horns in the snowy mountains of Utah during the Great Blizzard of 1899 – in a harsh time and a brutal world where the lines between right and wrong aren’t always clear and good doesn’t always triumph over evil. The film is notable for its explicitly radical politics and dark tone. – 1968, 102 minutes

"Brutal, bleakly beautiful … one of the most uncompromising and unforgettable finales ever filmed" – Leonard Maltin

BONUS! New Mexico film historian, Jeff Berg, has been watching Spaghetti (or Euro) Westerns since they were first released in the United States, several of which were partially shot in New Mexico. Through independent study, Berg has gathered lengthy and in-depth knowledge of this iconic genre. Berg will be on hand for the Saturday June 30th screening with a brief introduction of Eurowesterns and he’ll offer a few tidbits about The Great Silence - one of the best of the bunch.

A special thanks to The Guild Cinema for its enduring friendship with Italian Festivals of New Mexico and for including great Italian films in its movie offerings!
