The San Giuliano Lake Oasis is located in the San Giuliano Regional Reserve, established in 2000 in the municipalities of Grottole and Miglionico, in the Matera province. The area covers about 1300 hectares and is one of the most important wetlands of Basilicata.

The vegetation consists of poplars (Populus spp.), willows (Salix spp.), tamarisks (Tamerix spp.), Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis), cypresses (Cupressus spp.) and eucalyptuses (Eucalyptus spp.).

The Oasis also has a very rich fauna, thanks to the variety of the environments. Among the animal species, many water birds such as herons, egrets, coots, storks, cranes, spoonbills, ferruginous, avocets, Italian plovers. In winter the great egret and the cormorant make their appearance. Among the birds of prey here are common the red kite, the black kite, the buzzard and some specimens of osprey.

Finally, among mammals we can find here porcupines, badgers, wild cats and martens, as well as some specimens of otter.
