From the Latin cum-promittere, meaning "taking together", or better "taking the commitment to do something together". Not a bad thing in itself, at least for the Romans. But you know, the story is not always progress-oriented: today the mainstream idea is that compromise is the absolute evil. Especially in the Parliament: there, more than anywhere else, agreeing on a joint commitment can be really compromising.
