The verb, used today mostly in the figurative sense, originates in games like bowling or billiards, in which you win by rejecting (bouncing) something. The latest news tells us of failures, rejections that threaten to undermine the entire decision-making Italian system. In our case, too, the feeling is to be at the end of a long game, and the hope is that it is not a game we have already lost.
