Why we observe Columbus Day

Filmmaker Christopher Columbus discovered actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. On the second Monday in October each year we remember someone else by that name. This year the day falls on Oct. 12, the traditional date for Columbus Day, and the anniversary of Columbus' first landing in the New World in 1492.

San Francisco was the first of many U.S. cities to celebrate the anniversary as an Italian heritage day. Its Columbus Day parade, first held in 1868, is the country's oldest.
