Hundreds of Catholics, Italians and many others gathered Saturday downtown to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the 141st consecutive year. The feast, which includes amusement rides, Italian food and Catholic church services, was capped off with a procession that featured many of the statues from St. Joseph's Church in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.
"The procession mimics our following of saints to God," said Father Joe Capella, who grew up in Hammonton and is assigned to Camden Catholic High School. Capella said Hammonton's feast has evolved since it started with Italian immigrants going around and blessing farms.
