"L'Italia!" is an original song composed by Dame, Dr. Mary Rorro to celebrate the cultural treasure Italy is to the world. She wrote the melody and lyrics and the arrangement was composed by now 99-year-old World War II Veteran Maestro Matteo Giammario, who is also Italian American, and Dr. Rorro's former Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra conductor.
The duo reconnected during the pandemic and embarked on composing 16 songs as an intergenerational music collaboration. “L’Italia!” premiered and was performed at The White House by Dr. Mary Rorro with members of "The President's Own" United States Marine Corps Band. Attached is a brief video clip.
The second annual Italian American Heritage Month Celebration was organized by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations, (COPOMIAO) Honorable Judge Basil Russo. It was hosted by Dr. Jill Biden and with The First Lady and President Joe Biden in attendance.
Dr. Mary Rorro's mother Cavaliere Gilda Rorro, Ed. D. former Chairperson, and current Chairperson Bob DiBiase, of the New Jersey Italian American Heritage Commission represented the Commission and as members of COPOMIAO. Margaret Fontana is the new Executive Director of the Commission.
Dr. Gilda Rorro is Chairperson of the Commission's Curriculum project since 2003 and Vice President of COPOMIAO's National Curriculum Committee to preserve and promote Italian heritage in schools, led by Judge Basil Russo.
