Former Mayor Mauro Checchio, who died this week at age 90, was a dedicated and lifelong resident of Scotch Plains. A 1942 graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, he serve his country with the Marine Corps during WWII.
When he returned from the war, Checchio earned his Bachelor of Science/Commerce Degree in 1949 from the University of Iowa, where he met Portia Schuler, who would become his wife of 66 years.
