The 140th Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Festival opened Monday night on the fairgrounds off Third Street. Billed as "the longest-running Italian festival in the U.S.," it is run by the independent nonprofit Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society.

The society's all-male membership is limited to 50 and is open only to descendants of the founders or the men who marry into families of original members. Many members have been active for decades.
