An approaching 100-year milestone for the state's oldest active Sons of Italy lodge has sent its leadership on a quest to resolve a long-time predicament.
The problem: Much of the history of Alighieri-Garibaldi Lodge 494 of Westmont, Order Sons of Italy in America, is missing.
Italian immigrant families founded two Sons of Italy lodges in 1916 and 1917 in Camden that later merged into the current lodge in 1948, but between 1916 and 1948 and for decades even after that there are few records, so consequently, much lodge history has been unknown to current officers and other members.
