“Ariodante” will be on stage at Lyric Opera of Chicago. The opera is by George Frideric Handel, it is sung in Italian with projected English translations. “Ariodante” is an opera seria presented in three acts. The Italian libretto was based on a work by Antonio Salvi. It is adapted from Canti 5 and 6 of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. Each act comprises dance sequences, originally composed for dancer Marie Salle and her company.
“Villainous Polinesso lusts after Ginevra, but she loves noble Ariodante, who loves her in return. Polinesso will stop at nothing to get his way. Will Ariodante win out over his rival? The dramatic sparks fly, and so do the fireworks in a score calling for the maximum in dazzling vocal virtuosity. But thanks to Handel’s incomparable genius, Ariodante also offers deeply soulful arias to melt any listener’s heart. Here is one of the greatest glories of Baroque opera. Don’t miss its long-awaited Lyric premiere!,” says the Lyric Opera of Chicago website.
