Bring on some bocce tournaments, tarantella folk dancing, Mediterranean food and not to mention homemade wine and one might feel as if they recently arrived in this country from Italy. And that is somewhat the goal of the folks at St. James Catholic School as they stage an Italian American festival from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday on the school grounds at 400 W. Lisbon St.
"We started it nine or 10 years ago," Principal Kathy Untch Kettler said. "I am the one that started it. Then it fell away. It renewed this year. We have a nice pavilion in the back, so we can do it rain or shine." A southern Stark County village of about 900 residents, Waynesburg is said to have a rich Italian heritage as several people from Italy settled here, many seeking employment at Whitacre-Greer brick yard. St. James School accommodates preschool through sixth grade. Working in cooperation with the elementary school on the festival is the parish, St. James Catholic Church.
