Following a national trend, the village of Oak Park approved a resolution authorizing Oct. 9 as Indigenous People Day within its boundaries. The resolution was unanimously approved by the Oak Park village board at its Sept. 5 meeting. According to village spokesman David Powers, the resolution applies only to village municipal government, and not the park district, school districts, or other governments.
"The only change will be that on the municipal website calendar," Powers said. "The date will indicate Indigenous People Day. Village municipal government has never recognized Columbus Day as a holiday." Historian and author Dominic Candeloro, though supportive of the resolution, voiced his concerns over the perceived elimination of Columbus Day from the village.
