First it was Columbus Day, then it was Indigenous People's Day, now the city school board has renamed the holiday that falls on the second Monday in October Italian Heritage Day.
Kate Rivera, the board member who proposed taking "Columbus" out of Columbus Day, said she is satisfied with the name change because the board vote last week ensured that another day will be designated Indigenous People's Day on the school calendar. When that day will be observed has not yet been decided.
