Despite a rainy morning, sunny skies shone over Center Street Friday as people flocked in to sample the best Italian food the town has to offer. The highly-anticipated Southington Italian-American Festival got off to a great start, said Antonio Cusano, president of UNICO, which sponsors the festival along with the Sons of Italy and Sorelle d'Italia.
"We couldn't ask for a better start," he said. "The rain, thank god, broke and it looks like it will be a great weekend for everybody. We're going to have some great entertainment Saturday night with musicians from Italy. It is shaping up to be a very special festival." Cusano added that the festival's home-made wine contest had received 20 entrants by the start of the event Friday. Over the course of the day, he said, he hoped to get 10 more sign-ups for the contest 2 p.m. Saturday.
