Fake Marble at the Institute: The Secrets of Scagliola is a show featuring two contemporary artists revitalizing the secretive Italian art form of scagliola.
It was traditionally used during the renaissance to replicate marble, but the un-intuitive process, more similar to baking than painting, was so closely guarded by the most advanced plasterer’s it nearly went extinct in the 1900’s as industrialization made marble cheaper than labor it took to fake it.
