The annual Columbus Day Parade went on as scheduled this year, but looked a little different. Rather than marching through the streets, the Columbus Citizens Foundation moved the annual event online with Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the Grand Marshal of the 76th annual event. The event looked to honor Italian Americans and Cuomo was selected as Grand Marshal thanks to his strong leadership during the pandemic and his celebration of his Italian heritage.
“We’re not gonna march today on this Columbus Day, but there’s a silver lining,” Cuomo said at the event. “Last year, on this very day, we announced that we would build a statue to Mother Cabrini. There’s no doubt that she deserved it, that Mother Cabrini had not received the proper recognition that she deserved, and that New Yorkers wanted to memorialize her. And we did it.”
