Two opposing ceremonies will take place Monday to mark Columbus Day. The Columbus Monument Corporation will host a wreath-laying ceremony at the Columbus monument in downtown Syracuse on Monday morning. The ceremony will be followed by a luncheon at the Oncenter. County Executive Ryan McMahon and John and Leigh-Ann Tumino of the nonprofit In My Father’s Kitchen will receive awards at the luncheon.
Later the same day, Women of Italian and Syracuse Heritage in Central New York and Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation will host another wreath-laying ceremony at the Columbus monument. This event, billed as “Replace Columbus Observance,” will serve as a public showing of “our commitment to correct his false hero image.”
