Over years, restaurant has become 'like family'

Pompilios isn't the quietest dining place. After all, people like to laugh, babies sometimes cry and folks greeting each other warmly aren't bashful about it. Then there are the outside bocce courts, busy mid-spring through early fall, and no one's going to ask a bocce ball player to pipe down. "It's fun," JoEllen Thompson of East Row says simply.

It's been about 10 years since she and her husband, Dave Thompson, first walked into the little Italian restaurant at Sixth and Washington. They call themselves regulars – on a first-name basis with employees, owners and others who frequent Pompilios.

"They're a big part of our lives," JoEllen Thompson said. "They became family."
