Ferragosto is a public holiday celebrated annually on August 15 in Italy which coincides with the Assumption of Mary. The celebration however, pre-dates the Catholic church and actually dates back to the Emperor Augustus in 18 B.C. The name "Ferragosto" comes from the Latin “Feriae Augusti” – the festivals of Augustus.
