Columbus Day isn’t going anywhere in Nevada. Lawmakers on Thursday amended a bill that would have renamed the holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October honoring Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who is widely taught as the man who discovered America, as Indigenous People’s Day.
Legislation in several other states and localities have done away with the day . A staple in grade school curricula, recent opinion has changed regarding the 15th Century explorer, including criticisms of perpetuating rape and genocide of indigenous people in the Americas.
