The Italian American Club of Hilton Head (IACHH) has been awarding scholarships to local graduating high school students for more than twenty-five years. Each recipient receives $1,000 towards their college expenses for the following year at college. The checks are awarded at a special luncheon hosted by the IACHH, where Club members get to meet and congratulate the students.
The 2022 award winners’ luncheon was held on May 12th, at Mulberry Street Trattoria, in Bluffton, SC, USA. All seven recipients attended with family members and enjoyed a traditional Italian meal and camaraderie. Their career interests ranged from nursing to graphic communications to illustration. Four are committed to universities in South Carolina, while the rest are going to Alabama, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.
“With an education, you go in so many different directions in a world that changes very fast,” said Chairman of the Scholarship Committee Joe Maggi, while introducing the 2022 scholarship award recipients.
The IACHH Scholarship program includes specific awards, as well as general studies awards. The Alan Hare Healthcare scholarship is awarded to an applicant whose focus is in the field of healthcare. The Italian-American Scholarship is given to an applicant whose family heritage includes Italian. Each year, various donors may contribute $1,000 and stipulate a different criterion, like engineering, or business management. This year, the added scholarship was for a student interested in some form of engineering.
The rest of the scholarships are not career specific. However, ALL the scholarship applications require the same qualifications. These include academic success, extra-curricular activities, teacher reference, essay, and they must also demonstrate financial need. Scholarships are only available to graduating seniors who have been accepted into college and live in the Bluffton/Hilton Head area of South Carolina.
