In 1960, Giovanni Daniele arrived from Salerno, Italy and founded Red Rose Restaurant in Springfield with his sister Edda and her husband Nicola Caputo. Sixteen years later, he founded Nini's Ristorante in Easthampton -- a popular establishment now run by his son Johnny Daniele.
The elder Daniele passed away in 2011 from amyloidosis, a form of multiple myoloma. Ever since, his son has held an annual fundraiser at Nini's to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In keeping with the tradition, 10 percent of the restaurant's sales on Wednesday, Dec. 14 will go to the cause of cancer research.
