Passersby might first notice the breezeway patio decorated with New York subway signs and scenes from movies like Rocky, The Godfather and Goodfellas. Step inside Broadway Sandwiches, and the tiled wall with a stunning black-and-white design immediately comes into view behind the counter. But it’s the sandwiches that really shine, with fresh breads, imported Italian meats and fun names like Fuhgeddaboudit, Wise Guy and Mama Mia.
Opened downtown in early summer by husband-and-wife team William and Kelly Vinter in a former travel agency space, the deli is just a couple short blocks from Main Beach. They even offer beach delivery for orders of $80 or more. William, who came to the United States from Ukraine with only $700 in his pocket decades ago, began working as an electrician in New York before eventually moving to California.
