With this month's opening of La Sirena at The Maritime Hotel, New York City foodies are getting yet another Italian trattoria from Mario Batali. It's about that time. Every few years, the famous red-haired chef and restaurateur Joe Bastianich get together and open a splashy New York eatery – as was the case with Babbo in 1998, followed by Del Posto in 2005 and Eataly in 2010.
This time, they're taking a go-big-or-go-home approach, with a 200-seat esplanade. La Sirena has two dining rooms connected by a large outdoor patio and a massive, 38-foot white marble bar which has replaced a curiously dull outdoor courtyard, formerly occupied by another Italian trattoria called "La Bottega."
