Barbetta è il ristorante italiano più antico di New York, ed è ancora di proprietà della stessa famiglia che lo ha fondato nel 1906. L'idea iniziale venne a Sebastiano Maioglio che decise di investire nei pressi di Times Square. Apparteneva ad una famiglia piemontese ben nota e decisero di provare l'avventura americana.
La New York di allora era molto meno affascinante di oggi, non paragonabile alle grandi metropoli di un tempo come Londra e Parigi. Non c'era ancora l'Empire State Building, c'era invece il Flatiron, il palazzo a forma di ferro da stiro costruito appena 3 anni prima.
