Rocky Mount’s newest Italian restaurant, Sal’s Pizza at 2820 Sunset Ave., is open for business with menu items based on country cooking from Palermo, Italy. Owner Sal El Ehmeada said he’d originally planned a career in math and science but learned that he could make people happy and make a good living while making pizzas at night as a student at the University of Toronto.
“That was the best job,” El Ehmeada said. “What’s better than feeding people?” He changed course to add a culinary degree from George Brown College in Toronto before going to the source: Italy, where he spent time learning the cuisine of Palermo.
