Zito’s Deli has been a San Antonio sandwich favorite since 1974 when Joe Zito opened the first shop near Nacogdoches and Loop 410. There are now two locations, on Callaghan and Broadway, and Brad Zito took over the reins after his father’s death in 1996, but Zito’s remains a serious place for seriously good sandwiches.
During the lunch rush from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there is always a line of customers snaking through the Broadway shop’s dining area. Heck, I have even seen patrons tailgating their sandwiches when there weren’t any open tables. Zito’s has a streamlined menu of 15 sandwiches on fresh, house-made wheat, white or Italian flat bread, all served warm from a pass through a toaster.
