Touring the world of Italian sparkling wine, the route swings west to east like a pendulum from Piedmont, home to Moscato and Altalanga, to Lombardy with its Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese, on to Trentino with Trentodoc, passing through Veneto and its legendary Prosecco, and ending with a ruby streak in Emilia Romagna with Lambrusco.
These are the main Italian designations that have found their way to excellence by creating spumantes using the Metodo Classico or the Charmat Method that have come to be appreciated worldwide over time. So what goes on in central and southern Italy?
