Invented in Florence in 1919, Negroni is considered to be one of the most famous Italian cocktails in the world. It was named after his inventor, Count Negroni, who asked to add a touch of gin rather than soda to his Americano, in honor of his last trip to London. This is said to have taken place at Cafe Casoni in Florence.
Here’s how you make it: 1 part (1oz, 3cl) Campari; 1 part (1oz, 3cl) Gin; 1 part (1oz, 3cl) Red Vermouth; 1 slice of orange. 1) Pour all ingredients directly into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice; 2) Stir gently; 3) Garnish with a slice of orange. The quality of the gin is important to the final result, so go for a high-end one. The sweet vermouth offsets some of the bitterness of the Campari, a bitter aperitif obtained from the infusion of herbs and fruit in alcohol and water, often used in cocktails.
