The recognition, by Airports Council International (ACI), was part of a series of awards given to six European airports, depending on their passenger capacity.According to the ACI press release, the judges were impressed by Fiumicino's "operational excellence, effective passenger-centric approach, strong focus on innovation, safety management strategy, close cooperation with the airlines, continuous performance monitoring, clear environmental targets and active local engagement."
