In Sardinia, there is a tree that was already old when Jesus Christ was born. It is called S'Ozzastru, a wild olive tree that grows in Luras, in the Gallura region, and is considered the oldest in Italy. This true patriarch of nature has witnessed around 4,000 years of history. It was already a mature tree during ancient Egypt, it saw the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and up to the present day.
Its majesty is expressed in a trunk that measures 14 meters, with a circumference that exceeds 11 meters. Since 1991, it has been declared a natural monument, but for the Sardinians, it has always been "su babbu mannu" – the great father.
Despite the millennia on its shoulders, S'Ozzastru remains in excellent health, producing leaves and fruits, a perfect symbol of resilience and longevity. The next time you feel old, remember that there is an olive tree in Sardinia that has witnessed four millennia.
