In the Umbria region, one of the Italy' most beautiful villages -- still unknown to most tourists, who often favor nearby Assisi -- is about to turn back time to the 13th century: if you ever wondered how life in the Middle Ages might have been, just go to Bevagna, a town near Perugia with a population of 5,000, that until June 26 hosts this year's "Gaite Market."
"Gaite" is a word that derives from the Lombard term "Watha," or "guard," and refers to the four districts that made up the city of Bevagna and its surrounding area, i.e. St. George, St. Mary, St. John and St. Peter.
