Travel food rules for Italy: what not to ask for when in Rome

Italian food is probably the most delicious and popular cuisine on the planet. But Americans, including Italian Americans, can go into a gastronomic shock when they arrive in Italy to find their favorite comfort food is not listed on the menu. Here are a few suggestions to keep under the radar when visiting Italy:

Pasta and risotto
Linguine, spaghetti, fettuccine and risotto are not side dishes. Only a few plates of Italian fare will have these amazing carbohydrates as a side. Spaghetti and meatballs are comforting, filling and tasty, but in Italy, the meatballs are a separate dish from the pasta. Polpette, otherwise known as meatballs, are served alone. The spaghetti and meatball dish first debuted many years ago in another country. Also, keep in mind that chicken is never going to be close to a pasta dish.
