Italian contractor WeBuild has argued in the Italian Parliament that a bridge across the Strait of Messina is a strategic project that is ready to be built, will be an economic boost and can overcome the considerable seismic risks of the area.
The road and rail bridge connecting the island of Sicily with mainland Italy at Calabria would be 3.6km long, with a central span of 3.3km. Once completed it would become the world’s longest suspension bridge – overtaking Turkey’s newly opened Çannakale Bridge, which has a central span of 2.02km.
