A Christmas Eve Tradition from an Italian-American Perspective

During this time of year there is a dichotomy of emotions that most everyone over 40 (and maybe it applies to anyone who has lost family) experiences, as turkeys are dressed and doors are donned with wreaths.

On one hand, there is a joy and excitement that the season brings with it: festive parties, twinkling lights, glorious music, dreams of a winter wonderland and, always, there is food. As an Italian-American, food is as much a part of tradition and culture as language and song! Food is art! On the other hand, there is a longing for ages past, for childhood innocence and the way things used to be.
