Music is a common element uniting culture. It represents and produces spaces at the same time. Yet, music is so much more than that. Numerous and fantastically varied musical genres exist, some deeply connected with the local community of origin, and others eternal and relatable for generations; such is the global influence and reach of popular music.

“Music not only moves people, it also moves with them,” points out Leyshon (2008). Music has been, and will continue to be, created and reinvented many times. If you are interested in taking a journey through the American pop music world, and to rediscover artists, many of Italian descent, who were able to influence entire generations, please join us on this lecture.

In this journey, we will listen to different influential music and then focus on one ultra-famous Italian-American pop singer (Lady Gaga) who reinvented a fusion of pop music with other genres and created a unique, exquisite style, expressing the dreams, passions, and hopes of the current generation.

About Angela Cacciarru:
Angela was born and raised in Italy, and has more than twenty years of experience as an instructor of Italian language and culture. She got her BA in Economics from the University of Cagliari, in Sardinia, where she also collaborated with a poetry magazine as an editor and author.

She left Italy in 1990, and, since then, has developed an extensive international and multidisciplinary teaching background in the United States, Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa. She became an United States citizen in 2004.

Her knowledge of Human Geography, her academic specialty since her Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been important in diversifying and broadening the content of her classes.
