When the Dante Social Club's 82-year history comes to a close next month, it won't take with it Scranton's only link to the medieval Italian poet best known for an epic poem that took readers on a tour of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of the University of Scranton's campus near the Scranton Estate stands a statue of Dante Alighieri. The average passer-by may mistake it for a statue of a saint or priest; the white Carrara marble statue depicts a 7-foot, 6-inch figure in flowing robes clutching a book. Only the name, chisled in large capital letters at the base of the 5-foot-high plinth, reveals the statue's identity.
