In 2026, the city of Houston was named one of the “Capitals of Italian Creativity in the World” – alongside Belgrade and Bangkok. This title, awarded by the Italian government, aims to highlight Italian culture, innovation, and the global reach of the Made in Italy legacy.
For many in the Italian and Italian American communities, the recognition reinforces how far Italian heritage can extend and the significant contributions it makes to cultural and economic life outside Italy’s borders.
The honor stems from the project “Lots of Italy in Houston,” initiated by the Italian Consulate in the city. Through a combination of tools – such as an interactive app, educational programs for schools, and a schedule of city-wide events – the project will showcase both the historical and modern contributions of Italians and Italian-Americans to Houston’s cultural, scientific, medical, and technological development.
Vincenzo Arcobelli, the U.S.-area representative of the CGIE, described the recognition as a “result of great pride.” He expressed his strong support for the initiative and welcomed the selection as an opportunity to draw attention to the various sectors in Texas that offer Italy opportunities for growth, such as energy, aerospace, high-tech industries, medicine, design, and increasingly, food and wine.
Fucsia Nissoli Fitzgerald also congratulated the institutions behind the selection, expressing her excitement about Houston’s new role as a global hub for Italian creativity.
The recognition goes beyond being merely symbolic – it paves the way for tangible collaborations and exchanges. In March 2026, the “Taste of Italy” food and wine fair will bring Italian producers together with American buyers and distributors, giving Italian products and expertise greater visibility in the U.S. market. At the same time, the National Day of Made in Italy, celebrated in April, along with various events, will strengthen the presence of Italian culture and excellence in Houston and beyond.
By naming Houston as a capital of creativity, Italy is not only celebrating its traditions – it is investing in the future, where heritage, innovation, and cross-Atlantic connections converge. The project unites institutions, schools, entrepreneurs, creatives, and citizens – all working together to create a lasting legacy that blends Italian identity with global engagement.
For Italians abroad, especially those in Houston, this recognition represents a source of pride and a call to action. It offers a unique opportunity to transform cultural roots into living, evolving creativity that is visible and influential throughout 2026 and beyond.
