Piazza di Siena celebrates 100 years with sport and culture in Rome

Rome’s historic Piazza di Siena is preparing for a landmark edition in 2026 as the internationally renowned equestrian competition celebrates its 100th anniversary. The event, officially titled “Piazza di Siena 100 Years – Master d’Inzeo,” will take place from May 27 to 31 inside the iconic setting of Villa Borghese, bringing together elite riders, cultural programming, and large-scale restoration projects.

The 2026 edition also marks the centennial of the Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri, creating a double celebration for one of Italy’s most prestigious sporting traditions. Organizers confirmed that 19 countries will participate, with 10 national teams competing in the Nations Cup, while the Rolex Gran Premio Roma will once again serve as the event’s headline competition. Attendance continues to grow – organizers reported a record 62,000 spectators during the previous edition.

What increasingly distinguishes Piazza di Siena is its “legacy” approach. Since 2017, the event has become closely tied to environmental restoration and cultural preservation efforts throughout Villa Borghese. Recent projects have included the recovery of the Fontana dei Pupazzi, improvements to the Valle dei Platani, and, for 2026, the restoration of the historic Fontana dei Cavalli Marini. Organizers describe the initiative as a model in which major sporting events leave permanent benefits for the city rather than temporary infrastructure.

The competition remains free to the public, reinforcing its image as one of Rome’s most accessible international events. Alongside the sporting program, the anniversary edition will feature an opening concert, cultural installations, and storytelling exhibits retracing a century of equestrian history in the Italian capital.
