Passionate, joyful and full of energy, Giorgia Vitali is the only Italian girl authorized and recognized to practice and teach “Bollywaack” dance style in New York. Giorgia grew up in Torano, a small Italian village in the region of Abruzzo and started at early age to take dance classes at at "Associazione Danza Insieme", a dance school directed by Zorayda Di Sante.
The latter, encouraged Giorgia to travel abroad and focus on dancing by exploring new styles and genres. Classical, jazz, contemporary dance styles gave Giorgia the opportunity to express herself as a dancer and choreographer. Her career made a big jump when she first moved to the United States, in New York, to attend the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School after getting a scholarship.
New York became the perfect place for Giorgia to express her talent, her background as a dance and choreographer. After learning the Bollywaack style- thanks to Kumari Suraj, the creator of the Bollywaack style- she eventually became the only Italian dance teacher to be authorized to teach the Bollywaack dance as well as one of the very few westerners to practice it.
Bollywaack is a style that combines the rhythms of Bollywood music, with the poses of waacking and punking, a dance style from the seventies disco culture of the LGBTQ community of Los Angeles, which is now gaining some attention and experiencing a revival mostly in the Big Apple.
“It is a complex style that requires a long and hard practice, and, above all, a lot of love and respect for the culture it comes from”- comments Giorgia. "It is a style that lets you express your body and personality at its best and at most - continues Giorgia. It is not just a genre that requires a lot of preparation. It goes further. It is a style that allows you to completely free your body. Personally, it gave me the opportunity to grow as an artist and to think of myself as a full dancer ".
Fascinated by the Indian dances, both the classic and the Bollywood style, Giorgia took part of the world tour “Mystic India”, directed by Amit Shah together with the company AATMA Performing Arts.
Giorgia today is also part of the Kalamandir Dance Company and AATMA Performing Arts and, as a free lancer teacher she is contributing to the spread of the Bollywaack style in New York.
Her Italian background made also a difference in her American career, since she carries along an Italian dance style and education. “Being an Italian in the United States helped me to more gain reputation and appreciations since Italy has a great tradition and a long history in the dancing world. By being and having the opportunity to study and practice in the United States made me grow every days as an artist. I learn always new things, I perfect my dance skills thanks to the incredible and cosmopolitan artists in New York”- claims Giorgia.
Not only that, Giorgia found some similar and common elements between the classic Indian dance and the traditional Italian one. This helped her to better master and deepen the Bollywaack style as well as the Bollywood one.
Giorgia, who is also a choreographer, would like to keep spreading the Bollywaack dance style in Europe and all over the United States by continuing to perform and teach.
