Along the ridge of the Monte Subasio massif, there are some isolated peaks, the most important of which are, from north to south, Monte Subasio (1290 m), Monte Civitelle (1280 m) and La Sermolla (1191 m). In addition, the north-western end of the hill is San Rufino (1110 m) and the south-eastern end of the hill is Madonna della Spella (978 m); further south, separated from the valley of Fosso Renaro, Monte Pietrolungo (914 m).

The characteristic rounded shape and the small towns of Assisi and Spello that stretch along the slopes make Mount Subasio easily identifiable in the panorama of the Umbrian plain.

The Mount separates and connects, as a natural frame, the historic centers of Assisi, Spello, Nocera Umbra and Valtopina, as a unifying element of the landscape. The mountaintop, mostly flat and with showy karstic phenomena, contrasts with the steep slopes, especially in the eastern part.

The slopes of the Subasio are today covered by an important tree forest that is divided into three bands. The first is characterised by the olive tree, grown from Assisi to Spello on one side and from Costa di Trex to Armenzano and San Giovanni on the other. The second is the natural tree vegetation of Cerro and Roverella, Carpine Nero, Orniello, Maple as well as Beech and Holm oak. Resinous forests, created by reforestation, characterize the third belt along with meadows pasture on the top of the mountain.

The wide variety of natural environments is home to only a poor fauna despite the fact that hunting has been banned for several decades in the vast area of the State property of the land: wolfs are occasionally reported, the golden eagle is proof of settlement until the '60s, as well as the Alectoris graeca.

The current mountain management favors the new colonization of partridge, wild cat, squirrel, pigeon, pica, jay as well as porcupine, badger, fox, weasel, marten and finally wild boar.

Among the birds of prey, especially on the eastern side, there are buzzards, goshawks and axiol.
