Name a famous Italian American novelist not from New York and who do you come up with? John Fante, of course, author of the Brotherhood of the Grape, Wait Until Spring, Bandini, Dreams From Bunker Hill, Ask the Dust, and other works frequently associated with Los Angeles.

Although well known as an iconic ethnic writer in our own day, he scarcely seems to have been very fortunate or successful while he lived.
