Former Montclair resident Linda Carman watched her father's dream roll off the presses this month. It all began in 1991 when Joseph Isadore Marinello, a union organizer in the San Fernando Valley, fell ill with terminal leukemia. Given just months to live, Marinello recorded his life story and love for the garden and Italian cooking.

Ten years after his death, Carman and her sisters -- Joan Bowman of Santa Barbara and Jeri Pederson of Grants Pass, Oregon -- discovered their father's tapes and knew his story needed a wider audience. They transcribed his stories, tips, advice, then added their mother Julia Marinello's collection of favorites to his original set of 30 recipes. The result was a book titled "La Cucina Marinello."
