Many City Council members are now firmly behind the push underway to rename Columbus Day in Baltimore. The bill was introduced Monday. It has several more steps to go. Every October, for more than 125 years, Baltimore's Columbus Day Parade winds through the Inner Harbor and Little Italy. It's said to be the oldest celebration of Columbus in the nation.
But a new bill introduced in the City Council would rename Columbus Day as an official holiday in Baltimore City to Indigenous People's Day. Bill sponsor, Councilman John Bullock, said his proposed change is about celebrating what he calls the true legacy of the continent.
